Many independent shopkeepers still create extravagant displays in December, but rarely taken to the extremes seen in the first decades of the twentieth century; Dorothy Whipple describes beautifully the poulterer's crammed with turkeys and the draper's stuffed with eiderdowns in High Wages. Many of Eric Ravilious illustrations in The High Street (1938) - this is 'Hams' - are based on shops in Castle Hedingham in Essex where he lived, and where much of the high street survives but with different occupants.
