Queen Elizabeth

Art Fund is the national charity for art which helps museums buy works of art: being a member has several perks, one of which is free entry to many museums and galleries and another is the quarterly magazine. The new issue highlights the appeal to raise money to keep the Armada Portrait in Britain (the sum needed is vast – nine million – but if thousands of us gave even ten pounds that would be a start) and there is a fascinating article about the painting’s symbolism e.g. why the Queen wears no jewels on her hands (it’s in order not to distract from the globe).
