Mary Elwell painted Quiet Hour in 1942. It is not in the book about Fred Elwell (where Mary is allowed a few pages) and is not on the BBC/PCF site – although it seems to be in Hull, presumably in a basement while the Ferens is renovated. The Hull site is in a muddle: the second half of this page about a painting by Fred actually refers to Quiet Hour. It says: ‘Despite recent research there is a stark contrast between her art, both in terms of the scale and quality of her output, and the general poverty of public awareness…This painting is a highly decorative and modern picture, in tune with contemporary developments, which asserts her achievements as a highly accomplished and creative artist.’ Hear, hear.
