In Plats du JourPatience Gray and Primrose Boyd wisely suggest replacing the English mealtime tradition of 'a variety of dishes' with a single plat du jour, accompanied by 'a green salad, a respectable cheese...fruit in season, and, wherever possible...a bottle of wine'. In fact the accompaniments themselves would make a perfect August meal. This is an illustration of a picnic (1990) by Glynn Boyd Harte (1948-2003) whose book Mr Harte's Holiday (1990) is, among other things, a celebration of simple but excellent French food.
