In the 1920s, before the advent of the glamorous Modernist Odeons and "super cinemas" which could seat up to 3,000 people, there were picture palaces and electric theatres whose names embodied the magic and newness of cinema. Many of the suitably ornate and elaborate buildings have disappeared, but a few survive as reminders of the early days of film. This is the Grosvenor Picture Palace on Oxford Road in Manchester, which opened in 1915 and was at the time the largest cinema outside London.
