Scarborough's most famous literary association is with Anne Brontë who visited the spa town several times to take the waters (above in 1813). In 1849 she died there and was buried in the churchyard of St Mary's. However, there are also more recent associations, including Winifred Holtby who was educated at Queen Margaret's School in the town (it has just closed after 124 years). And the 'other' Elizabeth Taylor stayed in Scarborough from 1940 to 1945 while her husband was in the RAF, and wrote At Mrs Lippincote's (1945), her first novel during this time.
