The cinema was understood to be an influential and serious aspect of culture from the very start. Virginia Woolf wrote a typically clever, witty, and provocative essay entitled The Cinema in 1926 after seeing the silent horror film The Cabinet of Dr Cagliari, now regarded as a masterpiece of German Expressionism. It was made in 1920 and released in the UK in 1923; there is an early review here.
