Ramsgate still owes a great deal to the philanthropy of Dame Janet Stancomb-Wills, first female Mayor of Ramsgate (1923-24) and local benefactor. Many of the projects she financed are still in place, for example the Dame Janet School, Winterstoke Gardens, and the Jackey Baker recreation ground. She also she also helped to fund Ernest Shackleton's polar expeditions, and in return he named a glacier in Antarctica after her.
