In the 1930s and after the early death in 1935 of Ernest, Dod Procter's artistic style softened and changed, as illustrated by The Quiet Hour (1935, New Art Gallery, Walsall). Later, her work fell out of favour and fashion, yet another example of how difficult it can be for female artists (and writers) to sustain a legacy. More recently, she has been rediscovered and there has been an exhibition and a book by Alison James (2009). And yet, as mentioned earlier in the week Morning, one of the most famous paintings of the C20 is not on display in Tate Britain.
