Much of Asakusa has altered beyond all recognition, but the famous Sensō-ji temple which dates from the C7th - although it's now mostly post-war reconstruction - is still at the centre of this bustling, colourful part of Tokyo. Hiroshige's woodblock print, Market at Asakusa in Edo (1853-6) depicts a scene which is not much changed; the bright red architecture, the gigantic lanterns, and the crowded Nakamise-dori Street which once sold goods to pilgrims and now sells food and souvenirs to visitors.
