Betty Joel not only designed furniture and a wide range of items for the home including rugs, heaters and wireless cabinets, she also worked as an interior designer and had an extraordinary client list. This included The Savoy and Claridges (above, c1932), Lord Mountbatten, Winston Churchill, the Daily Express building on Fleet Street, and Viyella House in Nottingham, Despite this, not one piece of her work is on display in the V&A which has several in its collection. Work needs to be done, and earlier this year the University of Portsmouth offered PhD funding for a research student to make a start in uncovering Betty Joel's short but exceptional career which ended when she left the company in 1938.
