This is one of our writers, Emma Smith, pictured in 1950 with her typewriter and novel The Far Cry (1949). Her early life was coloured by travel and adventure; she volunteered to crew on canals during the war, an experience which brought "exhilarating freedom" and material for Maidens' Trip (1938). Later, time spent in India resulted in The Far Cry which was written in Paris: "I took up residence, alone with my typewriter, in a tiny room in the Hôtel de Tournon". Our author page shows the marvellous photograph taken by Robert Doisneau of her on the banks of the Seine with the typewriter during a Parisian heatwave.
