In a light-hearted poll in 2021, Cwmbrân was voted the UK's favourite New Town. It was built as part of an ambitious post-war building programme and although it is often overlooked, it is an important example town-planning and architecture. The Gwent Square mural (1974) designed by Joyce and Henry Collins depict the phases of local development - Iron Age, Roman, Medieval, and Industrial - and is their only artwork in Wales.
