Today, Professor Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell (b1943) is credited with one of the most important discoveries of the last century: the discovery of radio pulsars, made when she was a  PhD student. However, it was Professor Bell Burnell's supervisor, Antony Hewish, together with Martin Ryle, who were awarded a Nobel Prize in Physics in 1974. This article gives the background to this controversial exclusion.
