February is a busy time for tree surgeons making preparations for imminent growth by lopping and pollarding while the trees are still dormant (yet to be done in the painting yesterday's Post). Clare Leighton (1898-1989) produced a series of wood engravings based on the country year, a version of the medieval Labours of the Months. This is February: Lopping (1933). Her book Four Hedges is a classic.
