On the Post this week the theme is textile mills and the continued presence of many Northern towns and cities. They are huge and impressive reminders of the industries which once dominated, and of the sheer numbers of women they employed. At one time, Wigan had at least twelve; this is The Dinner Hour, Wigan (1874, Manchester Art Gallery) by Victorian genre painter Eyre Crow (1824-1910). It could be  a scene from Mary Barton (1848) or North and South (1855) by Elizabeth Gaskell.
