Landscape Viewed from a Window was begun on Matisse’s first trip to Morocco and finished on his return in the winter of the same year, when it became the left-hand side of a triptych. It is the view from his window at the Hotel Villa de France and it shows the Anglican church of St Andrew’s and the city of Tangier. (Two sentences about this marvellous painting! It seems completely inadequate. But the Post is meant to be a ‘quick fix’ since we at Persephone Books are always conscious that our readers are busy people, so we are desperate not to be long-winded. Here is a rather good article in the Washington Post about the 1990 exhibition and Matisse in Morocco in general.)
