Although many mills have been demolished. others are being adapted and reused with great success. This is the Grade II listed Oats Royd Mill in Luddenden near Halifax, built in the 1850s by the Victorian textile magnate John Murgatroyd as a steam-powered worsted spinning mill. It has been converted into apartments in a quite spectacular setting. Neil Horsley argues "that mills are as important a part of our national heritage as churches, cathedrals and country houses" and has written Mills Transformed which documents the regeneration of many Northern mill buildings.
