Cooking with Persephone Books: Anna Jones in conversation

Castle Farm, Midford
Saturday 20th April
1pm to 4pm

Food writer Anna Jones will be in conversation with Bee Wilson, followed by a three-course vegetarian lunch inspired by Persephone's cookbooks (a glass of wine is also included). There will of course be Persephone napkins adorning each table and you are welcome to take yours home at the end. The menu is still being finalised but will be something along the lines of the following:

Bread

The Hedgehog | A Dark, Malty, Delicious bake

From They Can’t Ration These by Vicomte De Mauduit, p.53.

‘The Hedgehog is a delicacy which few people have tasted’.

(No hedgehogs were harmed in the baking of this bread.)

Soup Du Jour

Soup A La Bonne Femme | A Spring Soup of cream & sorrel

From Plats Du Jour by Patience Gray & Primrose Boyd, p. 80.

‘A culinary portrait uniting the two principal concepts of womanhood, symbolized by the malleability of cream and the acidity of sorrel’.

Luncheon

Love In Disguise | An 18th Century Jest

From Good Things In England by Florence White, p. 168.

A Spring plate from the heart

‘By 1928 I found I had struck a rich line of research.  We had the finest cookery in the world, but it had been nearly lost by neglect’.

Pudding

An Excellent Trifle | A Classic

From A New System of Domestic Cookery by Mrs Rundell, p.189.

Sponge, Custard, Raspberries, Cream.

‘Good management of the house depend on the eye of the superiors and consequently that nothing is too trifling for her to notice’.

Please note that the menu will be entirely vegetarian and we are unable to offer alternatives. Also, seating will be communal.

Castle Farm is a 10 minute drive out of Bath (or a one hour walk through the fields). You will need to arrange your own transport. Taxis can be booked on 01225 423377 or download the Veezu app; alternatively, there are taxi ranks on Queen Square, by Bath Abbey, and at the train station.
