Allegedly, ‘by the start of World War Two Dorothy Coke was a popular and well known artist’ – but where is her work now? During the War she received a short-term commission from the War Artists Advisory Committee to paint women working in various services, and some of this is in the Imperial War Museum here; perhaps her 1920s and ’30s work is in an attic somewhere and will be rediscovered on the Antiques Roadshow, as happened recently with Evelyn Dunbar. This is WAAF Instrument Mechanics at Work 1941.
