Despite phenomenal players such as Suzanne Lenglen (1899-1938) who, amongst many achievements, was the first women's world number one from 1921 to 1926 and won Wimbledon six times, women's tennis has lagged well behind men's. It has perhaps been held back by outdated expectations of ladylike behaviour and dress rules in the professional game; only this year did Wimbledon make concessions to the all-white code for women. Parity in prize-money is still a battle being fought by Billie Jean King and others.
