Although he lived for years in LA, Hockney remained ever-loyal to Yorkshire and never lost his accent. As a young student at Bradford School of Art, he painted and drew what he saw there in muted colours before the explosion of Californian colour and light happened. This is his 1954 lithograph Fish and Chip Shop.made when he was seventeen. He gave a print to the owners of the Sea Catch in Eccleshill which the teenage Hockney frequented (this is him on the right) and it hung there for years.
