This week we have paintings done in tempera. Before the 1500s, tempera, a mixture of pigment and egg which is usually painted on a panel prepared with gesso, was the favoured method of most artists. It dries quickly and is a time-consuming, demanding process which may explain why it fell out of favour after the advent of oil paints. However, at the beginning of the C20, there was a Tempera Revival, the subject of an online exhibition. It includes this painting, Monday (undated, private collection) by James Tarr (1905-96) which emphasises the delicacy of colour and detail which can be achieved with tempera.
