Brian Epstein persuaded the Beatles, now with Ringo Starr, to drop the leather and on-stage antics, and took them to his tailor, Beno Dorn, to have dark blue mohair suits made. In September, 1962 he commissioned local photographer Bill Connell to take a series of photos. According to the just-published Fashioning The Beatles, Connell posed them 'amid the rubble and poverty of their hometown, highlighting them as something fresh and authentic rising from the ashes of a city struggling to recover from the Second World War...None of this was gimmickry. Gritty Liverpool was the band's reality...the photographs spoke to Beatles' lack of artificiality and association with their northern...city, while also making them look like a new generation'. London next, then the world.
