Bed in Venice (1984-88) by Howard Hodgkin is in College Park Corporation, NY) which says it "is...one of Hodgkin’s most literal paintings. Easily identifiable are a reclining figure on a bed in front of a window, and a window or bed curtain." What it doesn't say is that this is a beautiful study of the colours of Venice: the pale green water of the canals, the dark green painted shutters and doors, and the red brick, plaster and terracotta of so many of the buildings. Like many painters before him, Hodgkin captures Venetian red in all its glory.
