In 1906 the Wilsons left Wyldes (afterwards it was lived in by the architect Raymond Unwin while he helped to build Hampstead Garden Suburb) and Charlotte became active in the women’s movement. In 1908 she c0-founded, with Maud Pember Reeves, the Fabian Women’s Group, which it is still active – Persephone was represented there at a dinner a couple of weeks ago – and led its research programme. This resulted in Round about a Pound a Week, a study of the lives of the women of Lambeth, Persephone Book No 79. The ODNB writes: ‘Charlotte Wilson played a leading part in encouraging serious and influential research into women’s issues at a critical time in the growth of the feminist movement. She was distinguished by intelligence and industry, reticence and reliability.’ There was a PhD in America in 1987 but alas no one has written a biography as yet.
