Persephone has now published all of Dorothy Whipple's novels. As we have said so often before, she is very hard to write about and it is very hard to define why she is so good.This in itself is one of the reasons for her 'neglect' outside the relatively narrow circle of Persephone readers: if academics and literary critics don't write about someone then they are not considered serious by the 'media' and it's a merry-go-round of neglect. The 'academy' and all that it implies has a vast influence and this can be seen even this week with the Booker longlist. Nevertheless, Dorothy Whipple is our bestselling writer and if you haven't read her - Happy Reading! (And, yes, it obviously does help to be called Dorothy to be part of the Persephone canon.)
