Vanessa Bell’s Landscape with Haystack, Asheham was painted in 1912. What an extraordinary painting for its date! (It is normally at Smith College Museum of Art in Northampton, Mass. The author of our April book, Gwethalyn Graham, went to Smith for a year in 1932, but this painting was not purchased for another twenty years so Gwethalyn would not have seen it while she was there. She would have loved it though.)
