31st October 2022

Now that the clocks have changed, dusk in late October and November is a special time of day, with an often atmospheric mix of fading daylight, colourful skies, lamplight and lighted windows. Virginia Woolf captures it beautifully in her essay, 'Street Haunting' (1930), when she goes out, ostensibly to buy a pencil which is “an excuse for walking half across London between tea and dinner”, but more to enjoy “the greatest pleasure of town life in winter— rambling the streets of London". Lower Regent Street, Dusk) (for sale) by Michael Alford (b1958) shows how little has changed since Woolf wrote about dusk in the city.
