While still hard physical work, doing the laundry by hand at a communal lavoir in France must have been a lot more pleasant and enjoyable in the summer months - with the added benefit of faster drying times. There are still lavoirs dotted all over France, including a fine series along the River Eure at Chartres. While many have been abandoned, others are interesting focal points of local history.
