There is a fascinating overlap between Madeline Linford (1895-1975) and Dorothy Whipple (1893-1966). Both are associated with Manchester and Lancashire, and their journalists' and novelists' eyes focus on the same details of women's everyday and domestic lives with curiosity and empathy. Indeed, They Knew Mr Knight (the photos is a still from the 1946 film) was one of ML's Novels of the Year in 1934.
