Madeline Linford also wrote five novels, including Out of the Window (1930) which is full of precise and revealing details about Manchester in the 1920s, including life in the rapidly expanding suburbs (one of the novel's locations resembles Chorlton, pictured here in 1927). It was to be her last novel, a decision described in her obituary 'a loss to literature'. As is all too often the case with brilliant women, recognition is long overdue, but in 2018 ML was included in the Women Who Shaped Manchester exhibition at the John Rylands Library.
