A Corner of the Artist's Room in Paris (1907-09, Sheffield Museums) is one of Gwen John's best-known paintings. In 1904 she moved to Paris where she modelled for, and had an intense affair with, Auguste Rodin. Of this personal space, which she guarded fiercely, Tom Lubbock wrote, "It's a refuge, a retreat, an interior space, a place of safety and manageability, for someone in a very fragile condition". Keeping the World Away (2008) is a novel by Margaret Forster inspired by this painting and Gwen John's life.
