The Convalescent (c1923-24, Fitzwilliam) is a fine example of Gwen John's painting technique, her chalky pastel palette, and her sparing use of familiar props and objects. Image and model are both beautifully composed, but it is clear there is much more happening beneath the surface, something which is borne out by the melancholy story behind it.
