The Highgate Literary and Scientific Institution was first discussed in 1839 at a meeting at the Gatehouse Tavern and has been in this elegant building since 1840. As well as holding special collections on London, Highgate, Samuel Taylor Coleridge and John Betjeman, it also runs a remarkable number of lectures, walks, screenings, and creative activities such as embroidery and painting. It is a marvellous advertisement for the continued success of private and subscription libraries.
