Gertrude Harvey (1879-1966) was central to her husband's middle period when he moved on from the Newlyn School plein air style and concentrated on domestic interiors and conversation pieces. As with the striped skirt she wears in Gertrude in an Interior (1929, private collection), many of her modern, colourful garments appear several times. She was a talented dressmaker, knitter and designer; one journalist wrote, ‘if the garment is especially attractive, you may be sure it has been made by Mrs Harvey herself’. Gertrude's sister managed the first Cryséde Silks retail shop in Newlyn, and there's a nice link here as one the Cryséde designs is the endpaper for High Wages
