Most of Harold Harvey's paintings are relatively small, no more than 24” x 20”, so faster to paint, more affordable (at the time), and easy to hang, and thus a good way to achieve a stable income. He also used his own surroundings, props, and collections which reveal an artist who valued colour, pattern, flowers, everyday household objects - and books, as seen here in Lunch (1918, private collection) This is very apt, as his paintings are on the Persephone Classics editions of Kitchen Essays and They Were Sisters, and there are many more we would happily use.
