Like Voysey, Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) paid meticulous to attention to all the small details of his buildings. He designed a number of clever, ergonomic door handles for his private, public, and studio buildings, including this in Villa Mairea (1939); the leather is wrapped round the metal to make it warmer to the touch and to give a better grip. Visitors to Helsinki can see a variety of doors and handles in the excellent tours of his studio and house.
