Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962) set a strong precedent for knitters. Here she is in 1941, knitting at a "We’re in the Army Now" conference at Vassar College. She was seldom seen without her knitting bag, and knitted at political conventions, on trains and planes, on the beach, after dinner parties, while serving at the United Nations, and at informal family gatherings. One wonders what the media reaction would be today.
