As well as being a painter, Lovis Corinth was a skilled printmaker using etching, lithography and dry point, and woodcut. It is his overlapping of art history techniques, -isms and movements together with a vast range of subject matter, some of which may be described today as 'challenging', that makes him difficult to categorise. But a favourite theme in all media is that of mothers and children; this is Mutter und Kind (1905).
