The ubiquitous østehovel or cheese slicer designed by Thor Bjørklund (1889-1973) was patented in 1925, and is is a fine example of simple, functional, affordable Norwegian design. Bjørklund was a furniture maker who was inspired by the carpenters' plane as a way of obtaining thin, even slices of cheese. It is produced in Ringebu in Gudbrandsdalen and more than 60 million have been sold worldwide. Examples are held in the National Museum collection.
