Charlie Porter's book ends with him taking up sewing to make his own clothes and to enjoy the "alchemy" of construction. As he points out, many contemporary patterns reflect the influence of the Bloomsbury group's approach to clothes, in particular those designed by Merchant & Mills. The Factory dress (above) is an example of Bloomsbury workwear translated into a modern idiom. It is easy to make and wonderfully comfortable to wear.
