One of the earliest, grandest, and most influential conversions is the magnificent Musée d'Orsay in the former Gare d'Orsay, built in 1900. It was closed in 1939 because its short platforms could not accommodate the new, longer trains and its location precluded extension. It was saved from demolition in the 1970s and reopened as the Musée in 1986. Today it is possible to have coffee behind the enormous clock in the fifth-floor cafe then go outside to look out over the stunning Parisian panorama.
