Salt's Mill is the vast centrepiece of the beautifully preserved model village of Saltaire (a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001) built by Sir Titus Salt (1803-76). The mill opened in 1853, cloth production ceased in 1986, and the following year the mill was bought by the late Jonathan Silver who reimagined it as a place where culture and commerce could thrive together. Inside there are shops, including an excellent book shop, a diner, galleries and plenty of Hockneys. Beyond, there is Salt's utopian vision to explore; Saltaire is easy to reach by train, and well worth a full day out.
