The National Trust organises tours to John Lennon and Paul McCartney's childhood homes (for an amusing but rather cutting account of a visit, read Craig Brown's brilliant book). This is John Lennon's bedroom in'Mendips' on Menlove Avenue, Woolton, where he lived with his Aunt Mimi. He spent hours in here reading - he was a voracious reader - writing and illustrating his Daily Howl newspaper, playing his guitar, and composing songs. Mark Lewisohn's magnum opus Tune In is arguably the best account of the Beatles' Liverpool childhoods.
