20 Forthlin Road, Allerton, a short bike ride away from Mendips, is the completely unremarkable council house where Paul McCartney lived with his father, Jim, and brother, Mike (his mother Mary died not long after they moved there in 1955). But the National Trust has done a marvellous job of showing how this sort of house looked at that time, and the stories of Paul and John 'sagging' off school and college to write and rehearse classics such as 'She Loves You', 'Love Me Do' and 'I Saw Her Standing There' emphasise how central it is to the Beatles' story. The photo by Mike McCartney was taken in the front room in November 1962
